Diurnal tides are more prevalent at middle latitudes when the tide-raising bodies are at high declination.

The most typical tidal cycle has two high tides and two low tides each day, and is known as a semi diurnal wave. Approximately the same heights are reached between both the each high or low tide. One high tide and one low tide occur each day in a diurnal wave. The height of the following high and low tides is about the same.
