The AP, AP oblique, and lateral projections are used in routine radiography examinations of the elbow. Latitudinally and medially rotated images are included in AP oblique projections. The elbow is flexed 90 degrees to obtain the lateral projection (lateromedial view). 90 degree flexion of the elbow joint is necessary for the diagnosis of some significant joint disease conditions, such as the potential visibility of the posterior fat pad.
The elbow fat pads are least compressed when doing this, and the olecranon process can be seen in profile. Additionally, the olecranon process simulates joint disease by elevating the posterior elbow fat pad during partial or full extension.
