The thin muscular bands of the muscular layer of the large intestine are called the teniae coli.

The wall of the large intestine contains the similar kinds of tissue which are present in other regions of the digestive tract. However, there are a few discriminating features. The mucosa contains a large number of goblet cells but lacks presence of any villi.

The longitudinal muscle layer, even though existent, is not complete. The longitudinal muscle is restricted to three definite bands, called teniae coli, which cover the full extent of the colon.

Contraction of the teniae coli applies force on the wall and results in the formation of sets of pouches, known as haustra, across the colon.
