Scientists determine locations for drilling for natural gas by analysing the reports of seismic surveys. Many of the natural gas drill sites are located on land and some are also located on ocean beds.
Methane makes up the majority of natural gas, which is a mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons that also contains minor amounts of other higher alkanes. Low concentrations of trace gases including helium, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide, and carbon dioxide are also typically present.
Seismic surveys are used for exploring areas rich in petroleum, natural gas and mineral deposits. Acoustic waves are used in seismic surveys to generate images of the ground by analysing their vibrations. While certain seismic waves can travel deep under the earth through solid rock and fluids, others can simply move along the surface of the planet like water ripples.
