What is poetic language ?
Language poetry places a strong emphasis on the reader's contribution to a work's interpretation. It evolved in part as a reaction to what poets perceived as preceding poetry groups' careless use of strong lyric feeling. They preferred William Carlos Williams' use of vernacular American English to what they viewed as the "heightened" or overtly poetic language used by the New Criticism movement in the 1950s and 1960s. In their poetry and poetics, New York School poets like Frank O'Hara and the Black Mountain group placed an emphasis on both speech and common language.
Some Language poets, on the other hand, focused heavily on metonymy, synecdoche, and severe examples of paratactical structures in their works, which, even when using normal English, produced a totally distinct texture. The ultimate product is frequently strange and challenging to comprehend at first look, which is exactly what Language poetry intends: to engage the reader in constructing the meaning of the poem.
