I think you forgot to add the text I am supposed to analyze but... i have seen another question just like this about the author writing about the sea. he says something like "the sea licked its greedy lips". If it is that passage then the author is using a type of figurative language called personification. personification is when the author or writer gives human traits or characteristics to something that is non human.
