In this poem by Thomas Hardy, the author talks about dying and the regrets of life through his figurative language. He mainly uses euphemism to target on death to emphasize the unpleasant state of the topic. He wants to indirectly make readers feel his sadness. I believe Hardy used euphemism to allow readers share his pain and insights on how he missed the beauty of life. He used imagery with the hawk and hedgehog who experienced life differently. He also used similes to compare the sad symbols to his feelings.
