this is a guess. i am trying my best to help but i think that the reason why this works is because this is be the equation y=mx+b and this can be graphed so you can find the point of intersection between the two points.
this can also be solved by substition when you plug in the y value for the other y so it would be -2/3x-4=3x+2 then once you solve for x you plug in the x value into one of the equations to solve for y then you get the intercecting point (x,y) which is the same answer you get while graphing.
